Q: Are the “baby blues” and postnatal depression the same?

A: The “baby blues” are different from postnatal depression. The “baby blues” are pretty common (50-80% of women) with onset during the early days following childbirth. They typically go away spontaneously within the first week to ten days sans treatment and are not considered as a clinical disorder. When symptoms of depression are severe following childbirth and persist for more than a week or two, medical assessment is required to establish if this could be the onset of postnatal depression or another type of postnatal disorder.
